Domestic Violence is an Epidemic

Most of us think, “That could never happen to me. That only happens to people who don’t have money or aren’t educated.” That is not the case.  Domestic violence is not prejudice.  It sees no color, it sees no class, and it could happen to the smartest person in the world.

The other common thought is “it’s not abuse cause I don’t get hit.”  That is also not the case.  Domestic Violence also comes in many forms, physical, verbal or emotional, financial, and sexual.  It doesn’t have to be a fist to be abuse.

Most people also think it’s a man that hurts the woman.  That is not always the case; women can be just as abusive but more in a physiological way than physical. It can also happen with same sex partnerships or transgender partnerships.  It can also happen with the elderly in a care giving situation i.e. be between grandma and daughter, grandpa and son, or any variation of this.

There are many misnomers out there and I could go on about them. However what I want you to walk away from today is that domestic violence is all around you.  Your neighbor, relative, friend, or you have experienced or will experience a form of domestic violence.

Most of us live our lives thinking it will never happen to me or someone I love.  Think about this, 1 in 4 families experience domestic violence. When you begin to open your horizon to the different kinds of abuse and the different ways that abuse can happen you realize, it could happen to anyone around you.

When domestic violence enters a home it doesn’t just affect the people involved.  It affects everyone in that household as well as anyone they come across such as; friends, family, work place relationships, schools, etc.

This is what I mean when I say domestic violence is an epidemic. It spreads from person to person and place to place.
