Cultural Diversity and Domestic Violence
Culture and Domestic Violence
The United States contains numerous groups of people with diverse ideas regarding domestic violence. Understanding how culture influences individuals, families and communities is important to ensuring the ability of domestic violence victims to make choices that result in violence free lives.
Culture is NOT a valid excuse for domestic violence. Abused immigrants and refugees experiences are similar to other victims; they face coercion, physical violence, intimidation, threats, isolation, economic, emotional and sexual abuse and destruction of possessions or important documents.
